The Burghers of Calais in Ueno (Tokyo)

This is The Burghers of Calais ahead of National Museum of Western Art in Ueno. I usually go to Ueno on a fine day, to go to the zoo or museums. Therefore, their background is always a blue sky. I think that the weight of their suffering might be different according to the environment.

In the world, there are so many The Burghers of Calais. Candida Hoefer showed us series of photographs that were composed of twelve The Burghers of Calais in different atmosphere.

In Ueno, there is Balzac, too. So I want to show you that next time.

Zwolf-Twelve

上野の西洋美術館前のカレーの市民。ロダンのカレーの市民は世界中で様々な環境に置かれているが、上野は特に高いところに置かれている部類らしい。台座の下から見上げることになるのでディテールはよく見えない。僕が上野に行くときは美術館か動物園が目的なので大抵は晴れた日で、彼らの背景はいつも青空である。この日は特にイチョウの黄色とのコントラストが綺麗だった。自分を犠牲にして市民を救う苦悩の重さも環境によって異なるのではないかと思う。他のカレーの市民はどんな場所に立っているんだろうと思ったら、Candida Hoeferという写真家の作品に１２の異なる場所に立つカレーの市民をあつめたZwolf-Twelveという本があるらしい。ちなみに上野にはバルザックもいるので今度通りかかったら写真を撮っておこうと思う。
